Newport

7th-9th November 2019

In the winter of 2019, City of Sanctuary UK and the Red Cross Voices Project brought together 20 people from sanctuary seeking backgrounds to take part in a Sanctuary in Politics course especially for those living in the UK’s nation of Sanctuary, Wales.

This three-day event aimed at developing participants’ understanding of politics and how to engage with decision makers in addition to building their skills and confidence to tell their own stories in the media or a variety of public forums. Through their empowerment, participants were then encouraged to have greater involvement in leading the Nation of Sanctuary movement.

Over the course of the programme, participants engaged with the UK parliamentary outreach team, the Engagement Officer for the National Assembly of Wales, councillors, MPs and learnt about the political history of Wales from Rev. Aled Edwards OBE. They also had the opportunity to tour the Senedd.

Throughout the programme, participants regularly met with their mentors to discuss and plan their final assignments and how they would conduct them.
